An island day can be one island, one meal, and one waterfront section. Use the Transport Department's ferry directory to identify the operator, then consult the current sailing information for both directions. A sandy shore does not establish that swimming is available or suitable. Check LCSD notices, lifeguard arrangements, water-quality information, and on-site flags, and be ready to enjoy the sea from land instead.
Before you go
Four island-day styles
| Destination | Possible focus | Transport check |
|---|---|---|
| Cheung Chau | Village streets, lunch, and the Tung Wan area | Check vessel type and return queues |
| Peng Chau | Compact streets and a short pier-side walk | Central route and final sailing |
| Mui Wo | Lunch, Silver Mine Bay, and a short village section | Check ferry and Lantau connections separately |
| Lamma Island | Yung Shue Wan or Sok Kwu Wan as the base | The two piers are different route destinations |
Protect the return before choosing the walk
For the outward trip, check the day category, public-holiday arrangements, and vessel type, allowing time to locate the pier and board. Save the operator's page and notices rather than only a screenshot of an old timetable. Choose a preferred return and a later backup, arriving earlier on crowded days. If walking across Lamma from one pier to the other, consult the second pier's route information; the departure arrangements are not automatically the same as those at your arrival pier.
Choose the walk using a map, climbs, and the group's ability. A path between villages may involve slopes and exposed sections, so a single village and nearby waterfront can suit older companions, young children, or pushchairs better. Avoid adding another island through several unplanned transfers: one missed connection can consume much of the day. Choose lunch and rest stops with the return pier in mind, so a relaxing meal does not leave a rushed walk back.
Decide separately on swimming and sea views
If swimming is part of the plan, select a beach whose current access and lifesaving arrangements you have checked, and observe red flags, thunderstorm notices, and water-quality advice. Lifeguard provision varies by season and venue, so yesterday's information or another beach's hours are insufficient. Remain on land when warnings apply rather than following other swimmers. Beach games, picnics, and photography also need to respect designated areas and local management instructions.
When weather or suspension notices affect the trip, use an urban indoor alternative and handle any tickets or meal bookings under their actual terms; refunds are not automatically universal. Visitors and residents share boats and streets, so keep entrances and thoroughfares clear. Take rubbish away and allow for the island's slower pace. The return ferry is part of the outing, not an afterthought to squeeze in after the final photograph.
Plan one island, one waterfront section, and a return with a backup; decide on swimming using current beach information.
