Guangzhou is large, so a city name is not enough to choose a hotel. Mark your destinations before choosing the station and base.
Before you go
Getting your bearings
Liwan and Yuexiu suit old-town exploring, Tianhe offers commercial areas, and Haizhu lies across the Pearl River. Allow an onward connection after arriving at Guangzhou South.
Choosing transport and a base
- Pick a focus: old town, shopping, or riverside time.
- Compare arrival station and destination, using the hotel's exact map position.
- Use the metro between major areas, then plan the final connection.
- Work backwards from the return train, allowing for station checks and the platform.
Practical local notes
Guangzhou South, Guangzhou Railway Station, and Guangzhou East are distinct; use the full name for tickets and pickups.
With luggage or older travellers, check lifts and the final walk as well as the metro line.
Choosing with luggage in mind
For a short stay with luggage, minimise changes. Check the walk from the metro exit to the hotel, not just a district label such as Tianhe. If Liwan is the focus, put the connection back to Guangzhou South into the timetable so it does not dominate the afternoon. Check room prices and road conditions separately around large events.
Choose the district before the station and hotel.
