Foshan's five districts offer very different visits. Ancestral Temple, Shunde, Sanshui and Gaoming are not one compact city centre. Choose heritage, food, woodland or family leisure first, then plan transport and accommodation around the exact district instead of trying to connect every well-known attraction.
Before you go
Understand the city's geography and choose a base
Chancheng anchors Ancestral Temple and Shiwan heritage. Nanhai extends from Guicheng to Xiqiao and Jiujiang across a large area. Shunde contains Daliang, Ronggui and other food towns; Sanshui is northwest and waterway-focused, while Gaoming lies across the Xijiang. Regional integration helps connections without making the districts a single walking route.
Stay near Ancestral Temple for first-time heritage and add Shiwan for pottery interests. A family resort outing needs a different base from a temple day. For Shunde food, identify the actual Daliang or Ronggui restaurant. Xiqiao, Sanshui heritage and Gaoming resorts each deserve a dedicated day, so compare hotels by location as well as price.
Every area: administrative units and visitor groupings
| Area | Character and reason to choose | Practical plan |
|---|---|---|
| Chancheng | Ancestral Temple, Liang Garden and Shiwan ceramics anchor Foshan's martial-arts and pottery heritage. | Spend a half-day at the temple and old streets, then choose Shiwan or Liang Garden. |
| Nanhai | Guicheng city life, Xiqiao Mountain and Jiujiang waterways span a large district; choose hills or rivers. | Give Xiqiao a day, or combine Guicheng with one waterside neighbourhood. |
| Shunde | Daliang, Ronggui, Lunjiao and surrounding towns offer food and gardens; centre the day on one meal and nearby streets. | Visit a garden, allow a relaxed lunch and explore nearby streets afterwards. |
| Sanshui | River confluences, forest parks and Lubao town create a nature-and-heritage trip in northwest Foshan. | Choose a Xinan park day or Lubao heritage day; treat flowers as seasonal. |
| Gaoming | Hecheng across the Xijiang, Yanghe hills and leisure resorts suit a slower one- or two-day trip. | Choose one resort area and nearby accommodation, with a short waterfront outing. |
Food and culture: explore with a purpose
Shunde milk puddings and traditional fish dishes fit a slow garden-and-street visit, with choices based on your dietary and food-safety needs. Chancheng heritage streets can pair with dim sum or sweet soups, and water towns with local fish. Confirm portions, prices and bookings, leaving time for a meal at an exact address.
Ancestral Temple's martial and lion-dance heritage, Liang Garden and Shiwan ceramics reveal different Chancheng stories. Qinghui Garden and Ronggui streets belong to a Shunde day, while Xiqiao and Lubao add temple and settlement traditions. Performance times, workshop classes and museum visits need separate checks; festival news is not a daily programme.
Nature, families and changing weather
Xiqiao suits a forest-and-culture day, Sanshui's parks a garden outing, and Gaoming's leisure areas an overnight stay. Lotus displays, agricultural venues and water activities vary by season and weather. Check gradients, connections and toilets for older travellers or children, keeping a short-route choice and indoor alternative rather than promising seasonal scenery.
Kilns, workshops, ancestral halls and commercial showrooms do not all have open visitor access. For ceramics, furniture or food gifts, confirm delivery, returns and customs. Public services use administrative addresses rather than tourist labels. Follow the venue's current notices for repairs, exhibitions and temporary festival arrangements.
Transport: plan the final connection
Foshan West, Foshan railway station, Shunde, Ronggui and Sanshui South serve different areas; Guangzhou South is not an attraction entrance. Urban rail covers parts of the network, but mountain gates, water towns and resort hotels still need road travel. Allow separately for collecting luggage, meals, return tickets and station checks.
Build a one- to three-day trip
For one day, pair Ancestral Temple with Liang Garden or Shiwan; a food day can centre on Qinghui Garden and one relaxed Shunde meal. Two days can combine Chancheng and Shunde. A third day can add Xiqiao, Sanshui or Gaoming. Check rural returns beforehand and keep resort family days light on additional stops.

Separate Chancheng and Shunde days, choose one landscape or resort district, and use exact restaurant and station locations.
